Breast reconstruction surgery may lead to more cosmetic enhancements for some, study shows

For women who have lost a breast in their battle against cancer, breast reconstruction surgery can provide a means to improve their self-image and, in many cases, help them start to move on after this harrowing event. In fact, recent research covered by HealthDay News indicates that about 10 percent of patients who opt for breast reconstruction surgery also go on to invest in other enhancements to further take control of how they look and feel.

“Researchers looked at 1,214 women who had breast reconstruction between 2005 and 2012, and found that 113 of them later had cosmetic procedures,” the source states. “The most common reason given by the women for having cosmetic surgery was the desire to improve their self-image.”

The most popular procedures among these women were liposuction, eyelid surgery and facelifts,  and many reported feeling better about their overall appearance – and themselves – after getting this work done.

While the researchers didn’t indicate what could be driving this trend, it’s possible that these women – after experiencing first-hand how a cosmetic procedure could affect how they saw themselves – simply saw no reason not to consult a Miami plastic surgeon about other physical concerns as they arose.
