Are silicone implants driving the rise in breast augmentation surgery?

Recently on this blog, we covered the latest figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), which showed an overall rise in the number of treatments performed across the country in 2013. Breast implants and eyelid surgery both made strong showings, while butt augmentation procedures finally made their way onto the list of sought-after surgeries.

The best plastic surgeons in Miami certainly have a few theories about the consistent rise in cosmetic surgeries in the United States, but the issue is still up for debate. One plastic surgeon from Tennessee recently weighed in breast augmentation figures in a blog post for the ASPS.

“While the data does not say exactly why [breast augmentation has increased,] some advances in technology may have an impact here. The first advance is the FDA approval of shaped, or form-stable, silicone implants. These new implants mimic the natural ‘teardrop’ shape of the breast. All three implant manufacturers are producing them and they are available to women as another option,” wrote Dr. David Reath.

In addition to advancements surgical technology and implant design, the rise in breast implants may also come down to an increasing degree of comfort with plastic surgery again. No longer are these procedures relegated to the incredibly wealthy or famous. These days, cosmetic enhancements are becoming a viable option for plenty of everyday men and women who just want to feel more confident about the way they look.
