Stretch marks are telltale signs that skin has rapidly stretched or even shrunk. These streaks can occur on almost any area of the body, including the breasts. Breast stretch marks can occur while the breasts are developing, after significant weight gain or loss and even following pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Stretch marks are simply scarring on the skin. This means that — like most scars — the stretch marks can fade over time. However, they will never completely go away. If you are frustrated with your breast stretch marks, there are a number of breast surgery options that can improve their appearance. Here, Dr. Chris Craft discusses how these breast surgeries can improve breast stretch marks.
Breast reduction surgery can help patients wishing to reduce the overall size of their breasts while also improving their overall appearance. During the procedure, excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed, and the remaining breast tissue is tightened and reshaped to create smaller, more proportional breasts.
Breast reduction can improve the appearance of stretch marks in two ways. First, some of the stretch marks may be permanently removed during the procedure. This happens when the skin that is removed contains stretch marks. Second, the procedure tightens the remaining skin of the breasts, which can make stretch marks appear smoother and less noticeable.
Breast augmentation increases the patient’s breast size and improves their body contours through the placement of breast implants.
In some cases, breast augmentation may also slightly improve the appearance of certain stretch marks. Filling out the breasts pulls the skin taut, which may help minimize stretch marks that appear as wrinkles or creases. Dr. Craft can advise whether breast augmentation will help in your particular case.
Breast lift may also minimize stretch marks as well as improve the appearance of sagging breasts. During breast lift, excess breast skin is removed, the tissues are tightened and lifted and the remaining skin is tightened. This improves both the position and the appearance of the breasts.
If excess skin is removed during the procedure, and that skin has stretch marks, the stretch marks will be permanently removed. Additionally, tightening any skin with stretch marks will improve the appearance of the marks.
